Apple will launch third-generation AirPods in 2021, according to 9to5Mac.
The news comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who believes Apple will replace the second-generation AirPods with the AirPods 3 in the first half of 2021. But you'll still be able to purchase the AirPods 2 through the holiday season.
Released last year in March, the second-generation AirPods feature “Hey Siri” voice assistance and the option of a Qi wireless charging case. But the design remained unchanged from the original AirPods.
The AirPods 3, Kuo says, will look more like the AirPods Pro. While he doesn't specify how the design will be similar, we can only assume the earbuds will feature shorter stems, removable silicone tip sets, and, of course, a similar wireless charging case.
But the standout feature on the AirPods Pro is noise cancellation, which isn't included on the first- or second-generation AirPods. So it's unclear whether Apple will add the feature to the AirPods 3 or keep it exclusive to its Pro lineup of buds.
Additionally, Kuo stands behind his previous report that Apple won't ship wired earbuds with the iPhone 12. He believes Apple is trying to boost its AirPods sales, given the decline in the second quarter due to COVID-19.
But if earbuds aren't your favorite style, you might want to keep an eye out for another potential release from Apple. In addition to a new set of AirPods, the company is supposedly releasing a pair of high-end headphones.
