Microsoft is adding a new enhanced power mode to Windows 10 Pro for users who need to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their computer.
The new power mode is a feature of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17101, released Wednesday. The preview is an early look for select users at the upcoming Windows 10 update, expected to roll out in March or April.
The new power scheme that everyone's excited about is called "Ultimate Performance," and it's basically designed for use on high-end PCs.
Currently, Windows' default "Balanced" power plan balances a computer's performance with energy consumption. The new plan, which users can select as soon as they update to the newest version of Windows 10, will prioritize performance over energy efficiency, and will consume more power as a result. It will not be available on battery-powered laptops.
"This new policy builds on the current High-Performance policy, and it goes a step further to eliminate micro-latencies associated with fine grained power management techniques," wrote Microsoft's head of Windows Insider Program and Senior Program Manager Brandon LeBlanc in a blog post. In other words, a computer in Ultimate Performance Mode will consume a ton of energy, but run extremely well.
This isn't the only exciting feature bundled into the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build. The build also includes improved emoji, updates to Windows app permissions, and a number of smaller improvements.
